I haven't played 4th gen or above, so I would say Johto, from second gen. It has really cool areas and secrets, and while some areas are copies of other areas (Goldenrod = Celadon, just instead of a square, it's a vertical rectangle), it's fun to play in. I'm not too deep within Gen 3, as I've only beaten the first gym leader, Roxxane. Gen 1's Kanto was pretty good, too.
